The Story

The Manistee Michigan lighthouse is shown here at sunset with a 1300-foot walk out to the lighthouse at the end of the pier. There’s a long catwalk above for the lighthouse keeper to use in bad weather. One of four Michigan lighthouses with remaining catwalks, it is also planked with boards which is another rarity. The North Pier shown here heads out into Lake Michigan at the newer Coast Guard Station building.

The current lighthouse is 38 feet high and contains an eight-foot lantern inside. Today, it holds the Manistee County Historical Museum with lighthouse tours offered during special events.

The quaint town of Manistee is a little off the beaten path but worthy of a visit with parks, trails, and other sights available. Fishing in the Manistee River is where to find salmon and steelhead to catch.

All in all, the long pier is a favorite spot for locals to fish and watch sunsets, and many painters and photographers have created artwork of this historic lighthouse.
